Depuis plusieurs siècles, les esprits critiques qui refusent à juste titre la foi en un Dieu fait homme croient pouvoir se replier sur une distinction faussement simple : entre un « Jésus historique » (mais dont on ne sait rien) et un « Christ de la foi » qu'on laisserait au domaine religieux. Cette position est une impasse dont il est urgent de sortir. La véritable scientificité consiste à examiner comment les textes évangéliques appartiennent à la culture hébraïco-grecque du midrash : tout se passe dans le texte et uniquement en lui, conformément aux textes sacrés hébreux où la parole et la réalité ne sont pas différenciées. Il ne faut rien exclure de ce qui arrive aux personnages des Évangiles, miracles compris, puisque cela fait partie intrinsèquement de leur signification. De plus, la figure du personnage Jésus (Yeshoua, M. Salut) est le résultat d'une double « personnification » : celle du peuple juif et de la présence de Yahwé dans son peuple. Les rédacteurs des Évangiles ont procédé à un admirable travail, en dehors de toute existence historique des personnages, et en dehors aussi des catégories que l'on a l'habitude de manier (légende, littérature, etc.). Il s'agit de textes entièrement symboliques, et entièrement élaborés dans le cadre du judaïsme de l'époque. Seule une confusion herméneutique, c'est-à-dire le fait de prendre au propre ce qui devait être pris au figuré, accentuée par la multiplicité des langues utilisées à l'époque (hébreu, araméen, grec), explique la croyance ultérieure en un homme existant. Nous devons tous nous réapproprier des oeuvres de pensée aussi étonnantes.

Proceedings of the First Meeting of Bertinoro on Early Christianity (2-5 October, 2014). Within the contemporary renewal of the exegetical and historical research on Jesus and early Christianity, this book focuses on a wider knowledge of the social and cultural context of the first two centuries, thanks to a systematic research of documentary materials and archaeological data (epigraphs and documentary papyri). Secondly, the book faces the increasingly perceived need to use all the existing literary material for the reconstruction of the historical Jesus and the first groups of his followers. Thirdly, the book stresses the importance of giving space to new epistemological and methodological perspectives in the field of human sciences. The last section of the volume is dedicated to the connection of contemporary research with the interpretations of Jesus and early Christianity developed in the modern age.

Geza Vermes is a household name within the study of the historical Jesus, and his work is associated with a significant change within mainstream Jesus research, typically labelled 'the third quest'. Since the publication of Jesus the Jew in 1973, many notable Jesus scholars have interacted with Vermes's ideas and suggestions, yet their assessments have so far remained brief and ambiguous. Hilde Brekke Moller explores the true impact of Vermes's Jesus research on the perceived change within Jesus research in the 1980s, and also within third quest Jesus research, by examining Vermes's work and the reception of his work by numerous Jesus scholars. Moller looks in particular depth at the Jewishness of Jesus, the Son-of-Man problem, and Vermes's suggestion that Jesus was a Hasid, all being aspects of Vermes's work which have attracted the most scholarly attention. Moller's research-historical approach focuses not only on the leading scholars of the field such as E.P. Sanders, J.D. Crossan, J.P. Meier and C.A. Evans, but also sheds light on underplayed aspects of previous research, and responds to the state of affairs for recent research by challenging the rhetoric of current historical Jesus scholarship.

Historical Jesus research, Jewish or Christian, is marked by the search for origins and authenticity. The various Quests for the Historical Jesus contributed to a crisis of identity within Western Christianity. The result was a move “back to the Jewish roots!” For Jewish scholars it was a means to position Jewry within a dominantly Christian culture. As a consequence, Jews now feel more at ease to relate to Jesus as a Jew. For Walter Homolka the Christian challenge now is to formulate a new Christology: between a Christian exclusivism that denies the universality of God, and a pluralism that endangers the specificity of the Christian understanding of God and the uniqueness of religious traditions, including that of Christianity.
